Jim and his mother started the original Mattingly's location on Howdershell in September, 1971. A fire destroyed the building and Jim opened the current location in 1985.
Jim learned the food and beverage industry quickly and Mattingly's evolved into a place for everyone. Asked to describe his business, Jim said Mattingly's is "every walk of life with white and blue collars and everything in between. It's a restaurant with quality food, a place to watch sports with the games on every night, and it's a neighborhood place for many regular customers. I know people by their first names and what they eat and drink," Jim said.
Mattingly's features a party room with video games, a banquet room that seats 125 for events such as showers and rehearsal dinners, a dining room and a long bar with a second entrance.
The restaurant serves a large variety of food including 25 appetizers but is best known for its homemade pizza's and fresh chicken wings. "We make the pizza fresh every day and start out hand-rolling the pizza dough," Jim said. "I can't think of anything better than pizza and a cold beer, but a lot of people love our Cajun or regular chicken wings too."
Mattingly's is also the home of the "Blue Flames," which Jim says is a group of 45 guys between the ages of 40 and 82. "We are long time friends who love to play golf or sponsor poker runs," Jim said. "We get together whenever we get a chance and sponsor an event that raises money for charities here in Florissant such as Marygrove & Special Olympics."
